At TopFruit we strive to understand and respect the cultural values and regulations wherever we operate. We actively support important initiatives in those communities where our employees live and work. This commitment is visible through our contributions to financial and volunteer support. Where feasible, we participate in programs that encourage our employees, by supporting initiatives that are important to them.
Social Responsibility
FUNDA CHILD was started in December 2005 by brothers Rob and Reyer Meihuizen. The project aims to provide affordable, quality education to deserving and disadvantaged learners. TopFruit has provided a helping hand to deserving children, empowering them to achieve according to their abilities, while striving to avoid a handout or entitlement mentality.
Through education, they are making a difference in halting the poverty cycle within individual families. FUNDA CHILD aims to encourage reciprocal behaviour in the children by encouraging them to respond to similar educational needs once they are adults and have the financial means.
TopFruit provides staff and unemployed people in the informal settlement bordering on their property lunch whenever possible. During the cold winter months, it is a much-welcomed warm meal for everyone.
Environment
We are committed to the survival of our honey bees. Together with other pollinators, they form an integral part of our agricultural industry. As a company that values sustainability and environmental conservation, we are committed to making a positive impact on our planet, and our Bee-friendly initiative is a significant step towards achieving that goal.
One of the most critical environmental issues facing us today is the decline in honey bee populations worldwide. Honey bees play a vital role in pollinating crops and contributing to global food production. However, they are facing numerous challenges, including habitat loss, climate change, and disease. At TopFruit, we recognize the importance of honey bees and are continuing our proactive approach to address this issue by partnering with Boland Cellar, Nedbank, NUXE and Pink Lady® Apples South Africa to plant bee-friendly trees via Greenpop.
Greenpop is a renowned organization that has been working tirelessly towards reforestation and various environmental awareness projects across Sub-Saharan Africa, planting over 200,000 trees since 2010. Through this partnership, we aim to contribute to their efforts and make a meaningful impact on the honey bee population.
Our initiative has two key components. The first component is focused on the planting of bee-friendly trees to ensure quality forage for honey bees so that good nutritious food is available for our bees.
The second component is focused on education, We aim to create awareness and educate people about the importance of honey bees in orchards, thus fostering the growth of healthy natural ecosystems and how to maintain and preserve them.
By combining education with action, we believe that we can make a sizeable difference in protecting honey bees and their habitats. To date, TopFruit planted 450 trees and together with our other partners in the Boland Forests for Life Pledge Fund, we have planted 3 872 trees via Greenpop and are committed to planting many more.
