As we embrace the new season, we find ourselves confronting fresh challenges and circumstances. The 2022 blueberry harvest presented significant hurdles, particularly in the Western Cape region. It ended on a low last year with severe fruit quality issues and a substantial portion of berries softening both on the plant and during storage from week 42 to week 48. This unfortunate scenario resulted in huge losses for the growers in affected regions. Moreover, an earlier two-week Portnet strike at the Cape Town harbour compounded the challenges, leaving little room for profit.
